Bonnet Huteau Muscadet Sur Lie, Les Gautronnières, Domaine Bonnet Huteau.
Bonnet Huteau Muscadet Sur Lie is a bone dry super-fresh, white with a delicate floral nose.
A firm favourite, it never seems to hang around long at home! What struck us first was the bottle, not a traditional embossed type more an unassuming burgundy shape and a very smart modern label.
This really is not like your generic Muscadet. Expressive and flavoursome with minerality, fruit and perhaps a little aniseed.
Bonnet Huteau is run by Rémi Bonnet who is president of the region’s Maîtres Vignerons cooperative cellar. Helped by his brother Jean-Jacques, the estate is based around the ruins of a château dating to the middle ages. They have about 48 hectares under vines, with some 42 ha planted with Muscadet. This already substantial estate has further increased with the purchase of 10 ha of the neighbouring Château des Gautronnières. The brothers are in the process of converting this to organic farming. This really does have the feel of being a family run affair and one that cares for the environment and future generations.
This is an exceptional wine and great value.
